Fabric protection for your sofa, applied and tested at home
Spills bead up. You wipe. Done. We apply a professional protector and do the water-drop test in front of you, with a 12-month touch-up guarantee.
Video transcript
After the protector cures, we pour water on the cushion in front of you. The drops sit on top of the fabric. A dry towel lifts them off with no mark left behind.Professional fabric protection in Honolulu costs $129 for a sofa on its own, or $289 with a deep cleaning included in our Sofa Shield package. It repels spills and makes cleanup easier, and every application comes with a water-drop test in front of you and a 12-month touch-up guarantee.
Fabric protection in Honolulu gives your sofa a head start on every spill. We apply a professional protector that coats each fiber, so coffee, juice and wine bead up on the surface instead of soaking into the cushion. You get time to blot it away. Like Day One is owner-operated, and Vitor & Fabi apply every treatment themselves across Oahu.
Then we prove it. Once the protector has set, we pour water on the fabric in front of you and watch it bead. If a treated area stops repelling within 12 months, we come back and touch it up. The best time to protect is right after a deep clean, which is why our Sofa Shield package combines both.

Fabrics we clean — and how
Every fabric reacts differently to water, heat and agitation. Here's how we handle the most common ones in Honolulu homes.
Linen & linen blends
Soaks up spills fast and shows water rings. One of the fabrics that benefits most. Apply after an acid-rinse clean.
Cotton & cotton blends
Very absorbent and common on slipcovers. Protection gives you real time to blot before a spill spreads.
Velvet
Applied in light coats and brushed with the nap, so the pile stays soft and the color looks even.
Chenille & boucle
Textured loops trap spills and crumbs. Protection helps soil release when you vacuum.
Microfiber
Often coded S and marks easily with water. We test first and apply lightly to avoid any spotting.
Performance fabrics (Sunbrella, Crypton)
Already have a built-in finish. A refresh after cleaning helps, but they need protection least.
Wool & wool blends
Naturally resists some soil. A wool-safe protector helps against food and drink spills.
Leather
Not a fit for fabric protector. We clean and condition leather instead, to protect it from sun and AC.
How we clean it, step by step
- 01
Clean or inspect
Protector bonds best to clean fabric. We deep clean first, or inspect a new sofa for factory residue.
- 02
Test the fabric
We check the code and test a hidden spot for any change in color or hand.
- 03
Apply & groom
Even, overlapping coats, groomed into the fiber on every surface people touch.
- 04
Cure
The protector sets as it dries, usually within the same few hours as the cleaning.
- 05
Water-drop test
We pour water on the treated fabric and show you it beads. Then we hand you the care card.

How fabric protection works
A fabric protector is a clear, thin coating that surrounds each fiber. It lowers the surface energy of the fabric, which is a technical way of saying liquids stop spreading and sink in. Instead, they sit on top as droplets. Oily soil also has a harder time gripping the fiber, so everyday dirt vacuums and cleans out more easily.
We use water-based protectors and favor fluorochemical-free formulas wherever they suit the fabric. Product lines change, so we'll confirm the exact product for your fabric before the job and share its safety data sheet if you ask. Once dry, the treated fabric looks and feels the same. No shine, no stiffness, no smell.
The protector goes on right after a deep cleaning, while the fibers are clean and open. Applying it over body oils and sand just seals the dirt in. That is why we built the Sofa Shield package: one visit, a full sofa cleaning then protection, for $289 instead of $348 when booked separately.
What protection does, and what it does not
We want you to buy this with the right expectations. Here is the honest version.
What it does:
- Repels spills and makes cleanup easier. Water, coffee, juice and soda bead up for a short window, so you can blot them away.
- Slows down body-oil buildup on arms and headrests, the first place light sofas turn gray.
- Helps dry soil, sand and pet hair release when you vacuum.
- Makes your next professional cleaning more effective.
What it does not do:
- It is not waterproof. A spill left for an hour, or pressed in by someone sitting on it, will soak through.
- It is not stain-proof. Red wine, turmeric, ink and dyes can still stain if they sit.
- It does not replace cleaning. Protected fabric still collects oils and dust over time.
The rule is simple: blot, don't rub, and do it soon. The protector buys you time. You still have to use it.
The water-drop test, done in front of you
Anyone can say a product works. We show you. After the protector has set, we pour a little water on a seat cushion. On treated fabric, it beads up and sits on the surface. We wipe it off with a dry towel, and the cushion underneath is dry.
You can repeat the test at home any time. Put a few drops of water on a hidden spot. If they bead, the protection is working. If they soak in within a few seconds, that area needs a touch-up. That test is also how our 12-month guarantee works: if a treated area stops repelling within a year of the application, text us a short video and we come back to touch it up. See the test on real sofas on our before & after page.
New sofa? Protect it before the first spill
The best day to protect a sofa is the week it arrives. A new sofa has no oils, no stains and no sand in the seams, so the protector bonds to clean fiber. Some stores sell a protection plan at checkout, which is usually an insurance-style warranty with claim rules, not a treatment we can test in front of you.
For a new sofa, you do not need a cleaning first. Book protection only: $129 for a sofa, $179 for a sectional and $39 per chair. We vacuum, check for factory residue, apply, and run the water-drop test. It is especially worth it for white and cream linen, light boucle and velvet, which are popular in new condos in Kakaako and Waikiki and show every mark.
Pets, kids and everyday life
Toddlers spill juice. Dogs come in from the beach with wet paws. Cats knead the same arm every night. Protection will not stop any of that, but it turns a lot of would-be stains into a quick wipe. Families tell us the biggest change is less stress, not just fewer stains.
Once dry, the protector is safe for kids and pets to sit, sleep and play on. For pet accidents, act fast: blot, rinse with a little water, blot again. Urine can still reach the cushion if it is not caught quickly, and for that we have a dedicated pet urine and odor treatment. Protection pairs well with dining chair cleaning too, since chairs take more food spills than any other piece in the house.
Which fabrics benefit most, and when to reapply
Protection helps almost any fabric, but it earns its price fastest on light colors and natural fibers. Linen, cotton, velvet, chenille and boucle absorb spills quickly and are hard to clean once stained. Performance fabrics like Sunbrella and Crypton already have a built-in finish, so they need protection less, although a refresh after cleaning can help. Leather needs a conditioner, not a fabric protector.
Protection wears off where people sit, lean and rub. Plan on reapplying:
- After every professional cleaning, since deep cleaning removes part of the protector.
- Every 12 months on a sofa used daily, or sooner with pets and kids.
- Any time the water-drop test stops beading on the seats or arms.
The easiest way to stay on schedule is our maintenance plan. We clean every 4 or 6 months and reapply protection on the same visit, with member pricing. Protection also works on sectionals and on mattresses. See every option on our pricing page.

Fabric Protection: questions, answered
Still unsure? Text us a photo and ask — a real person answers.
How much does fabric protection cost in Honolulu?
Protection alone is $129 for a sofa, $179 for a sectional and $39 per chair. Our Sofa Shield package, a full sofa cleaning plus protection, is $289, compared with $348 booked separately. Prices are before GET (4.712%). Send us a photo of your sofa and fabric tag, and we will confirm a flat quote.
Is fabric protection worth it?
For light fabrics, pets, kids or a sofa you love, usually yes. Protection gives you time to blot spills before they soak in, slows oil buildup and helps dirt release when you vacuum. It will not make fabric stain-proof, but it turns many would-be stains into a quick wipe.
Does fabric protection make my sofa waterproof?
No. It repels spills and makes cleanup easier, but it is not waterproof. Liquids bead up for a short window, so you can blot them away. A spill left sitting, or pressed in by someone sitting on it, can still soak through. Blot quickly, and do not rub.
What is the 12-month touch-up guarantee?
If a treated area stops repelling water within 12 months of the application, we come back and touch it up. Test it yourself with a few drops of water on the seat or arm. If they soak in fast, text us a short video and we will schedule the touch-up.
What products do you use? Are they safe?
We use water-based protectors and favor fluorochemical-free formulas where they suit the fabric. Products change, so we'll confirm the exact product for your fabric before the job and share its safety data sheet if you ask. Once dry, treated fabric is safe for kids and pets.
Should I protect a brand-new sofa?
Yes, and the sooner the better. A new sofa has clean fiber with no oils or sand, so the protector bonds well. You do not need a cleaning first. Book protection only, and we will inspect, apply and run the water-drop test in front of you the same visit.
How long does fabric protection last?
On a sofa used daily, plan on about 12 months before seats and arms need a refresh. Pets, kids and heavy use wear it faster. Deep cleaning also removes part of it, so we reapply after each cleaning. The water-drop test tells you when it is time.
Will protection change how my fabric looks or feels?
No. Once dry, the protector is invisible and has no smell. The fabric keeps its color, softness and texture. We still test a hidden spot first, especially on velvet, microfiber and delicate linens, so we can confirm there is no change before treating the whole piece.
How long before I can use the sofa after protection?
The protector sets as it dries. On a new sofa with protection only, that is usually one to two hours. With a Sofa Shield cleaning, most sofas are ready in 4–6 hours. Running the AC or using the trade winds on a dry day speeds it up.
